Speedtouch USB modem runs slow in SuSE 9.1

I've managed to install drivers for my Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem (that's the 'frog' one) but I'm only getting dial-up speed, not broadband. I used the speedmgmt.tar.gz off the alcatel site.

Have I missed a setting somewhere, as I'm getting speeds of about 56Mb/sec, not the 500Mb/sec that I get under 'another operating $y$tem'?

56 megabytes per second sounds quite fast to me. Are you sure you're comparing like with like? On windows they like to count in bits per second so you get big numbers and it looks really fast. linux utilities tend to count in bytes. 8 bits to the byte, so the numbers are a lot smaller. Are you getting any error messages in your logs about packets being dropped?
