I have mandrake 10.0. I have downloaded speedbundle-1.0 to install my adsl speedtouch 530 modem. When I try to run ./configure, I get this error message - could not find the source for you running kernel in /lib/modules/2.6.3-4mdk/build/make: [configure-stamp] Error1
Three things. Have you got the kernel source installed? Will the speedbundle compile against a 2.6 kernel? (it wouldn't for me, that was why I switched to the speedtouchconf package http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net/ ) and lastly, will the mandrake kernel run the speedtouch modem without being altered and recompiled http://www.mail-archive.com/speedtou.../msg05299.html
I have downloaded the speedtouchconf solution, and I followed the instructions, however when do ./speedtouchconf.sh I get an error message, saying that the bc file is missing. What is that, and how can I fix it. Please help
Thanx for the bc file adrew...got that installed and the speedtouchconf file worked...well sort off. I put in all the right info into speedtouchconf, following instructions step by step. But, on the very last step, when the microcode is supposed to load onto the modem, there is an error message - saying that the microcode failed to load, or that it has already been loaded. I then check that my details are correct, in the pap and chap secrets files, and try to connect the modem again. This time an error message comes back saying that the modem doesnt seem to be connected. But I know that it is connected, because I am using it right now with winxp ( I have a dual boot system), to send this message.
I have tried a few different ways to do this. Speedtouchconf seems to be the best and easiest way, but the microcode just wont load.
...just to clarify my previous post....the speedtouchconf file runs right through, I put in all the right info, but I get an error code saying - modem_run command failed (code250)
....after making changes to ...usb.c, do I need to recompile the kernel in order for the changes to be effective, and if so, then how do I do that and what options do I choose. I am new to linux...please help.
I'm afraid so. I've tried many times to recompile the kernel in various distributions and my experience has been that very many things break in the process. At least, with distos like Mandrake and Fedora, I should make an honorable mention for Slackware 9.1 and College linux (which is based on Slack). Both work well with a recompiled kernel. However, neither are easy to install if you're a newbie (or rather, I couldn't get past the command prompt until I'd succeeded with Scratch) so I don't know what to suggest. I was lucky, I started on Mandrake 9.1 which worked with the speedtouch modem no problemo.
<rant>It seems really mental to me that the speedtouch module is included in the kernel source and it's completely useless. Everyone who downloads the kernel source downloads a copy of the speedtouch driver and even people who've got speedtouch modems can't use it. How stupid is that</rant>
Well, after five days I've decided to have a break from this one. I think I have figured out how to do this. (well...I think basically it has all been written before, but at least now I can understand it a bit better)
-make sure that bc, gcc and make are installed
-change the usb.c file according to the above link
-compile the kernel
-run ./speedtouchconf.sh
...but like I said, I will come back to this later. Meanwile, I have come across a xandros 2.0 standard distro which came free on a cd, with a magazine that I bought (PC Authority, april issue in Australia), so I am trying it out.
In order to run speedtouchconf on xandros, I need to install gcc, which after looking at the readme file, I have discovered is a bit complicated.
....that's it...I'm going to go watch a dvd.
Well...after almost two weeks of trying to get this to work, I am finally online with linux on my adsl speedtouch modem. None of the usb solutions worked for me, but my speedtouch 530 usb modem also has an ethernet port, so I connected it via ethernet, rather than usb. It was a bit slow at first, but after editing /etc/resolv.conf, everything works fine.
