Spanish Keyboard Map Problem

Hey guys,

I'm having a real stickler with Vector Linux 5.9 and Slackware 12.1. I've just done a fresh install of each. I've gone up and down the list of keyboard maps available and can't get mine to work properly. I have a Spanish keyboard (which works flawlessly on Ubuntu/Debian/Fedora and Puppy). If I select the Spanish keyboard map my alphanumeric keys work fine but I can't get any of the correct punctuation characters.

On the Spanish keyboard (when it's working) the '2' button also has '@' and double quotes on it. I get @ with AltGr and quotes with Shift. On Vector and Slack I can't get double quotes at all and @ appears with Shift. All of the other characters are messed up in the wrong order. I can't get an exclamation mark from '1' either

I can guarantee that my keyboard is a standard Spanish layout. Which keyboard map do I use?

Oh, and just for the record I've tried two other keyboards without success.

Thanks folks.

Well this is the thing, I'm not using any desktops, just the terminal. When I do I use IceWM and XFCE I still have the same problem.

I tried working on this all night last night. The only way I got it to work was to reprogram the keyboard map myself. I did this in Slackware but when I take the keyboard map to Vector all sorts of weird things happen and I'm not sure why - I've been a Slackware user for 11 years and I though Vector was Slack underneath.

Beyond my depth.

Is your installation in Spanish? Would a Spanish installation or a live-cd set to Spanish, if that is possible, give you a file with a content that would help you? I'm just guessing. Your level of expertise is for me like meeting Grendal in the dark.
