Sounds like a challenge

Hello...
I have a system with 2 drives, and 2 operating systems.
Fortunately my windows operating system is somehow corrupt or warped etc and I can no longer use the windows OS. Everytime I try it asks me to insert the installation disk and begins the setup process for installing windows. I just want to get rid of windows now, and install Novell Linux Desktop to give it a test drive. I do not want to cause problems for the SUSE linux that resides on my secondary drive.
My question is can I some how erase or format what used to be my windows drive (primary HD) using the linux located on my secondary HD without causing problems to linux, grub etc?
If so can anyone here help map out the proceedure?
Thanks in advance.

firstly, "Sounds like a challenge" aws not a good choice of title. please be a little more insightful next time.

as for your query... the NLD installer shouldn't touch suse in the slightest. you might even want to disconncet that drive while it does the install, just remember that grub won't boot without it. the only issue is likely to come when installing a boot loader. Assuming that SuSE is more important to you than the new install, i'd suggest telling it not to install any bootlader whatsoever, and then just adding it on yourself to SuSE's grub config afterwards.

as you may have an open mind on these matters can I talk thru 2 suggestions

1) bios boots to old windows to old mbr which needs a bootloader to boot both drives
2) bios boots to second drive mbr with a bootloader to boot both drives

It is not clear to me which is your bios booting to from your post.

grub can boot any but you may need to be sure what is what when installing the new distro.

and highly likely you need to install a bootloader like grub on your preferred bios boot drive.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=237511 may help

if probs post your type of drives like IDE/scsi/sata and if not sata what is primary/slave and what bios boots to first please.

Suse is on hdb right? You can print out or write down /boot/grub/menu.lst
install what you want to hda and install grub to the mbr of hda then edit the new
/boot/grub/memu.lst that is on hda and add the Suse entry to it.
