Soundcard Problems in RH9

I originally installed Redhat 9.0 on my computer, which has a motherboard with onboard sound (C-Media CM8338). It detected the sound card, however the sound comes out as buzzing and grabled scratching noises.... So i went out and bought myself a cheap card from CompUSA to put in it... I installed the card and started Linux up, what do i do to get linux recognize the new soundcard?

I'm also a newbie, just started linux a few days ago, go easy on me :-P

Redhat comes with a utility called sndconfig which can assist in setting up your sound card. You must run it as root in order to have the proper privileges.

If that doesn't help you should look up the make and model of the card and - perhaps more important in lesser known brands - the chipset's make and model. It's usually printed on the chips pretty and it's easy to spot. That information will help in determining what sound module you need to load.

1) you should disable the onboard sound card in your bios
2) make sure linux does recognize it no more and remove any configuration for pervious souncard
3) insert your new soundcard
4) boot in to window and install it see if it works. if so, shut down your pc and power it up again and go start linux
5) after linux boots up, use snd or redhat-config-soundcard
6) if it doesn't recognize your sound card. then look up the cd that came with the sound card see it there is a linux .tar.gz or rpm file which was for your card. most cheap card use mostly supported chipset since they can't make it themselves.
