Hello Again Kind People,

Okay I have now tried all suggestions and i'm still not getting sound. yes, alsaconf does detect my emu10k1, yes i used a 0 (zero), not an o. yes i restarted the computer. still, no sound. the funniest thing is that if i turn the microphone on, i get sound from the microphone through the speakers, which tells me that something in there must be working. at this point, i am going to ask if anyone has a suggestion of a cheap soundcard that _is_ compatible with mandrake 9.2? lest there be any other suggestions, i think this is the route i am going to have to take.

cheers,
randal

Sound blaster 4.1 Digital
It doesnt have hardware mixer so u can play only one sound at once

Btw, u can make ur soundcard work since there is sound with the mic.
Just asking: are u sure that all volumes are turned up and not muted ???
use alsaconf to configure and alsamixer to unmute raise volumes

oh yeah - when you first install your sound card with ALSA, the default for PCM is muted. Use "amixer set PCM 100 unmute" to fix it.

hey,

thanks again for more advice. i tried running those commands. alsaconf knows my emu10k1 is on here. however, when i run alsa mixer, the only thing that shows up is my intel ch5 one. still no sound. i've searched this forum and the mandrake linux users forum and 95% of the time, people can fix this via unmuting. i think i fall in the 5% who just have an incompatible sound card, somehow. despite signs that sound is near, it doesn't seem to want to give.

maybe i'll mess around for a few more days while i look at soundcards.

cheers,
randal

remove all sound stuff from modules.conf and add this :

alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
# module options should go here

# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0

# card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

I have Mandrake 9.2.
I just recently had a boatload of problems trying to get my sound to work, although I have the nvidia chipset for my soundcard. Something I found that fixed my problems, was a simple kernel upgrade. I upgraded from the release (2.4.10 (?)) to the Enterprise Kernel 2.4.22-10. I was amazed to see not only my proper drivers work, but arts works reliably now and I have good quality sound..... it's worth a shot to see if it's your kernel. Here's a link to Mandrake's Kernel how to:

hello again. thanks for your advice. i tried pasting down your script vinay_s_S but again, still no sound. i am running the 2.4.22-10 kernel as well, but it doesn't bring my sound back online. your suggestions were very promising but i'm afeard that this soundcard situation really doesn't want to give. when i edited modules.conf and restarted, it changed to

alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1

# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0

# card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/nvidia* nvidia
above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-slot-1 snd-emu10k1
above snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss

note specifically the last three lines which i did _not_ enter in to the modules.conf.

plugging away,
randal

With onboard sound disabled, fix modules.conf and reboot. See if it changes itself again.
