SoundBlaster Live! 24bit

I can't get this sound card working. I've been searching on here forever and have found that emu10k1 should work with this card. However, everytime I try to get it to work using modconf, it gives me the message:
Code:
Installing module emu10k1. If the device isn't there, or isn't configured correctly, this could cause your system to pause for up to a minute.

FATAL: Module off not found.

Installation failed.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong.
oh, btw, I'm pretty new at this, so use small little words. LOL

[edit] forgot to say I'm using Debian Sarge [edit]

I assume you have tried the command ' modprobe emu10k1 ' If it fails then maybe you don't have it compiled. Search you /lib/modules/current distro version number and see if it exist in the tree. If not compile it in.

It's not compiled then, as I can't find it where you said to look. However, like I said, I'm pretty new at this and really don't know how to compile it. Could you either give me a step-by-step, or point me to a guide?

I forget where but do a search here and look for kernel compile how to. I don't use much debian stuff. What kernel version of sarge is it? You can get kernels at http://www.kernel.org . Depending on system if using udev whether you can goto 2.6.10> or not. If not stay at 2.6.9< or earlier. I don't know much about sarge. Hopefully someone can help you better here.

It's kernel version: 2.6.8-1-386.

I've just spent like 3 hours trying to figure out how to compile this driver. Can someone please post a step-by-step guide, as I'm just confusing myself by trying to figure it out on my own.
