Sound/Video Errors. Can someone help.

I have a gateway m675 laptop that has a built in sound card. I have tried to run /sbin/lspci but when I run it it says that it does not exist.

The Soundcard in question is a SigmaTel C-Major (or that is what my windows partition says.) When I am booted in to linux it says the module loaded is snd-intel8x0. From what gateway told me it is AC-97. Not sure if that bit of extra info will help. But I will try to add as much as I can to help you help me

When ever I try to play any audio I get nothing at all. Is there a way to fix this?

Secondly the video issue.

I recently installed Unreal Tournament 2004 on my linux partition. The install went perfect fine. But when I try to load up the game. The load up screen starts then goes away. I checked the log and here is what I found.

Log: Enter SetRes: 800x600 Fullscreen =1
Log: OpenGL
Critical: Couldn't set video mode: Couldn't find matching GLX visual

Exit: Executing UObject::StaticShutdownAfterError
Exit: Executing USDLClient::ShutdownAfterError
Log: waiting for file streaming thread to finish...
Exit: OpenAL Audio subsystem shut down.
Log: Exiting

I have searching everywhere that I could to find these two errors and still have come up empty.

Again I am new to linux so I may need a little bit more help then what most people here need.

Thank you in advance

Some things that would help us help you. You did not mention the distro you are using. With sound issues, different distros supply different utilities to help configure sound.

You can try typing sndconfig at a command prompt. That may work if your distro is Redhat or Mandrake.

Also check to see if you are muted, or the volume set to zero.

On the video problem, it appears you may not have a 800 X 600 configuration. Once again the utilities vary depending on distro. Of course you can always manually exit the /etc/X11/X86Config-4 file. That can be a difficult task.

Post back on the distro you have, and any utilities you have used. I'm sure you can get distro specific help here.

I am using Mandrak 10.0. I tried to run sndconfig but it says it does not exist. I also tried aumix -q but it also says it does not exist.

I had a look at the following URL http://www.alsa-project.org/ to see if your sound card? Sigma-Tel is supported. I couldn't find any evidence it is.

Generic drivers may work, depending how compatible it is.

I have never installed Mkd 10. Possibly someone with Mdk 10 sound experience can help more.

I also checked out teh Mandrake 10 hardware data base, here http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/hardware.php3

No evidence there it is supported.

Sound Issues

Hey try plugging your headphones into the first (microphone) port on your sigmatel jacks. Something about the generic drivers will not allow you to map the various jacks to different functions from what I see. I'm working on the next step, getting my microphone to work, but I don't know anything about editing the drivers and even if I did, it probably wouldn't work. Anyways I'm gonna get back to getting my mic to work. Oh and btw, it will not play to your internal speakers from what I have tried.
