Sound through FRONT jack, No Sound though Speakers

Hello all.
I am running 2.6.18-8.1.10.0.1.el5
(distributed through oracle, based on RHEL5).

This is on an everex(5000T) laptop.

The hardware sound device is realtek alc885. The sound module is snd-hda-intel.

The sound info from lspci and lsmod is below.

The problem is that sound comes through the front headphone/external speaker jack. It does not come through the built in speakers.

I have adjusted and unmuted all controls in alsamixer, amixer.

amixer shows all controls, even speaker, is unmuted and turned up.

Nothing works. The front works fine, so I suspect it has to be a mixer problem somewhere, but where? Is there some way to see what channels are what?
speaker-test -c8 -twav

also plays fine through "front left" and "front right".

Does any one have any advice?

This sounds like a hardware problem. Are you certain that the speakers work?

The machine is dual boot with win xp.
The speakers work fine in windows.

I downloaded the newest alsa drivers (1.0.14..).
No change.
I then downloaded the realtek linux audio package. It includes the same version of the alsa drivers.
Still no change - sound is fine through front jack, nothing through built in speakers.

I will try options in the modprobe.conf - perhaps 3stack-dig?

I have been working on this for weeks, and I have noticed that this problem is not uncommon, and no one has a realiable fix.

Advice? Comments?

Hello all, again.
For the benefit of anyone searching for an answer, I was able to get the built in speakers working.
For an EVEREX Laptop StepNote XT5000T the modprobe option that worked as:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig

6stack-dig also worked.

I was not sure where to put the option statement, since I thought I had tried 3stack-dig in /etc/modprobe.conf before. (It may have been just 3stack without the dig, I am not sure).

Anyway, I put that line in the following places:
/etc/modprobe.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/sound
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base (I created the file)
/etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.modprobe (I created that file)

I do not think it needs all those files for RedHat EL5, but I threw the kitchen sink at it.

Right now, the relatively minor problem is that the alsamixer has no Master volume control. I can control all channels with the spearate sliders, but there is no master to lower the volume.

Fortunately, gmplayer's volume control works to do that, but it would be nice to have a master control available from the mixer.

The latest alsa-driver as of today is 1.0.15

I also have the Everex XT5000T, and have managed to get sound working on both the laptop's "Front" speakers (including built-in "Center" speaker - the sub-woofer) and the headphones, using alsa 1.0.15

There are a few issues still existing however, such as the "PCM" (or master) control issue you reported.
Also the volume control on the "Front", "Center", and "Surround" seem to almost reach mute-level when lowered to only about 50% volume.
The laptop's front panel audio/volume-control dial doesn't seem to work at all either using the alsa driver 1.0.15. Not sure whether this will be fixed in later versions/updates.

I have posted a bug report on alsa-project's bug-tracking system. Feel free to add to it if necessary, or keep an eye on it to be aware of any future updates or fixes to the issues we are having:
