Sound stopped working, FC3

Hello, new to linux questions, but I've been a casual linux user for years.

I recently installed Fedora Core 3, dual booting with WinXP, on my Dell Inspiron 600m notebook. Everything was working fine, until I reinstalled XP; after that my sound no longer worked under FC3. After some fiddling I switched to XP and discovered that something had gone awry with the driver there, so I reinstalled it, and now it works fine under XP. However, it is still not working under FC3. I get a variety of error messages, which I will list below along with output of various commands.

As an aside, I have switched to KDE because at the same time my sound problems developed, Gnome began to hang at login and I had to actually power down the computer. Not sure if this is related.

Hope this isn't too much information, and thanks for helping.
Derek

When I log into KDE, I get the following dialog:

Informational - artsmessage
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

kmix: asks for current mixer, but there are no options in pulldown menu.

xmms: plays files without generating errors, but there is no sound output.

artsd command line, per "ps ux": /usr/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -s 60 -m artsmessage -c drkonqi-l 3 -f

Okay, I had to resurrect this, because after lots of frustration, I fixed it be reinstalling, and it happened again! After several days of everything working fine, my sound stopped working again under FC3. I get a popup message telling me to make sure the sound card is properly configured, there's nothing else using it, etc. It's pretty frustrating.

As a side note, this occurred after what I believe was the first time I used Music Match under XP for the first time after my XP reinstall. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them, this problem is really bugging me.

Thanks,
Derek
