Sound server informational message: Error while initializing the sound driver...

Hi guys,

I've been using Fedora Core 3 for about 3 months now, and I don't have any sound at all. Everytime I log onto KDE, the bessage below appears:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I've read a few threads which were about the same problem, but I couldn't do anything. In one of them, it suggested to set the audio device type to ALSA, which I couldn't do since I did not have this option in the dropdown box. It's on autodetect at the moment. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thxs guys!!

How about disable it completely since you don't need it. ALSA is still running even though KDE(artsd) is retarded.

Will disbaling ALSA solve my problem?

I'm using windows xp and fedora core 3 on a dual boot system. The driver for my sound card in windows is realtek alc861 audiodriver and is onboard.

Any suggestions to get my sound working in Fedora plz?

see i have the same problem, im using FC4, and when i installed, before updating the distro, there was sound, a normal sound, after i upgrade, no more sound for me, and the error is just appearing when i log into the X as root.. anyway, in normal mode i have no sound either. i went to the KDE control center, and tried every sound system i have in the dropbox, and left it in the "autodetect"... (i tried disabling ALSA) ... let say im with you LA004 waiting for help?
luck man!
