No sure if this helps but I ran into the same problem with SUSE 10.1 initially until I did the following
Change the content of /etc/modprobe.d/sound to read

options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=1 buggy_irq=1 enable=1 index=0

# W60f.uc9__j+J9c2:82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0

hi i m new in linux.i have asus p4p800-mx motherboard.i don,t have the sound driver for this motherboard to play sound in linux.plz help.the sound card on this motherboard is ADI AD 1888 AC'97 AUDIO CODEC IS ONBOARD TO PROVIDE 6 CHANEL audio playback for 5.1 surround sound and over 90db dynamic range.plz help frends

I have an old Hp compaq Dx2000 which i have installed Ubuntu 18.04 mate but i cannot get the sound drivers which are equally Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio. I have tried searching for a kernel but i can't find anything. So i'm looking for the said sound drivers?
