Talking Sound Problems in Puppy Linux

HooRahhhh the Panasonic CF-25 TOUGHBOOK lives! Big ups to grapefruitgirl girl for the help and replies. I ended up going back to puppy linux with the toughbook after trying everything from DeliLinux to a SIX disc download of slackware, mostly because it was the only one that would find the sound card through the alsa wizard. (i DLed alsa wizard to damn small linux, it looked exactly the same and wouldn't find the soundcard and i tried several releases) The funny thing was that Puppy's Dingo release ran like a dog so out of boredom, and a few nicer dead computers that needed an OS i downloaded some of the mods for puppy. Amazingly after i turned off some of the animations the Budda217 release ran amazingly on the toughbook so it got installed to hd and has brought my toughpuppy to life. on a nicer tower at home i installed the puppy mod wNOP v0.2 it is very nice an runs great without having to download and figure out the compiz fuzion, it also uses the ALSA sound wizard.

Here's the only problem left in my Linux quest... on both the toughbook and my home tower, i have to run the alsa wizard every boot or i have no sound. In the alsa steps it says "click yes to load in next boot" and it never does for both computers, i ended up setting the alsa wizard to run on startup, but it is kinda a hassle every time. i tried to edit a .conf file mentioned in the setup, but i think it may be one of two or just not even relevant. any help would be appreciated thanks, Bob

I've found a way to fix it on my computer maybe this will help you. Find out what driver alsa is using and any relavant info (odd irq's, dma things like that). Then create a script in your /root/my-applications/bin folder that looks something like this ( this is what mine looks like):

Code:
#!/bin/bash

#modprobe driver options
modprobe snd-sb8 irq=5
then put it into one of your startup folders ( I generally use .xinitrc)

Could one activate the same using konsole? How?

It's the same as doing a script

Doing it via konsole is the same as doing it in a script. Just type in:

$ modprobe driver options
(minus the '$')

So mine would be

$ modprobe snd-sb8 irq=5

you will just have to type it in every time you want to use sound.

p.s. I you having trouble finding out which module is used for sound go to the command line and type in "lsmod" It should be the one that starts with snd- . If your having any more toubles let me know and I'll try to help.

Thanks, good to know.

My problem got solved though.
It was my lack of computer know how that
made me miss the obvious on hardware software
hierarchy. Back plane is priority to front sockets.

I had used the front sockets in windows and forgot
there was a line out on the back too and that that
one was what the Linux program chose while me thought
there existed only one line out on the front of computer.

I have sound now in Puppy but need to know more of
which program works with files at youtube and BBC radio TV
