Smile Sound Problem with Kubuntu on Dell Inspiron e1505

Hi,

I'm new to Linux and recently installed Kubuntu on a Dell Inspiron e1505(Hardy Heron, the version designed for a dual-core). I can't seem to figure out how to get the sound working-- not sure if I'm missing a driver or what-- has anyone dealt with this before/have any tips?

Thanks!

Katie (:

Did you try a music CD ? does it work. what about an mp3 ?

Does youtube work with sound ? If youtube works abut mp3 does not work then there is a problem with codecs. See this ?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

If none of the above works the try:
sudo apt-get install alsa-base alsa-utils alsa-tools
and then
sudo alsaconf

try answering all the questions that _alsaconf_ will ask you and you should have sound...

Smile Hi!

Hi biophysics, thank you so much for your response!

Youtube, audio CDs and mp3s don't work-- I downloaded the alsa things but my command line doesn't understand 'sudo alsaconf' or 'alsaconf'-- what is the command here that I'm missing?

I might simply be missing a driver.. how can I check to see if I have the right driver? If I don't, is there a place where I could download it? I just barely know anything about what I'm doing... trying to learn. (:

Thanks again for your help! (:

Post the output of

#sudo lspci -vv

or
#sudo lshw
(audio part alone)

For drivers ...you use
#lsmod

Smile Hey again--

I have a new clue-- Banshee says "no codec" found-- does this mean I don't have a driver?

"00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)"

#sudo lsmod

If you see snd-hda-intel or hda-intel in the output, then the driver is loaded. Install alsaconf and lots more with alsa using synaptic/adept

Then try the alsaconf things and alsamixer/kmixer (for volume etc)

If you still have a problem, see the hda-intel page at the alsa site

Hi ktbug237. Could you please tell what commands and 'few packages' were neccesary to success? I have done what amani said and I see both hda-intel and snd-hda-intel in the output of lsmod... But I have no sound yet!!! And there is not alsaconf for Ubuntu. I only can use oss to play music with amarok and few other apps... Please someone help me.
Thanks. Greetings from Chile.
