Sound problem with Flash and festival

I'm running KDE on Debian and have got my sound up and running. The KDE control centre says I'm using the OSS sound system.

Most things seem to work fine, I can listen to music through XMMS, watch movies through xine and mplayer and play java games all with perfect sound. But, when I set up the flash plugin for firefox the video is fine but the sound is terrible and choppy. I have set it up on other machines with no problem and gave up on my home machine.

The other day someone introduced me to festival but the sound came out really distorted like it does through flash but again it works fine on my other machine.

Any ideas?
