After installing Slackware 9.1 (fresh install) I had the sound modules loading automatically during boot. Sound is just great.
So I compiled a custom kernel using the sources from the CD that includes the .config file as well. Made a few changes not related to sound at all. After I installed the kernel (2.4.22) the sound modules during boot do not load. The only difference in dmesg is that a line like PCI: Found IRQ 5 for device 02:03.0 is absent when booting the custom kernel.
When I now boot using the old one I kept around sound is configured automatically.
What did I miss?
Loading the sound modules myself (soundcore, ac97_codec and maestro3) it is all okay again...
This is on Slackware 9.1 with kernel 2.4.22 on a Dell Latitude C800.
I guess that should work. However, using a different kernel the modules are loaded automatically. So I wonder what the difference is. After all, they use the same startup scripts. Why does it work with one kernel but not the other one? And both have the same sound module built.
Yes, I did. The modules all show up in /lib/modules (for both kernels). That's why I don't understand why a different kernel that is basically the same as the original one does not load the sound modules by default. The other one does. During boot it just doesn't "see" the IRQ 5.
I still would like to know an answer to my original question. However, I "gave up" and downloaded kernel 2.6 and compiled the sound into the kernel. Now everything works fine without the need to change anything.
