Hi all,

I have installed a copy of Ubuntu 8.04 on a dual-boot system with Windows XP. It is Sony Vaio Laptop VGN-G11XN with 1GB ram and a Centrino processor. After the installation Ubuntu recognised everythin g fine but the sound is way too low even if I turn it up to the maximun using the Alsa mixer. It doesn't seem to be any problem with the drivers, when I type cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 | grep Codec I get 'Codec: Realtek ALC262'

And in terms with the audio device I've got I seem to have a when I run a lspci query:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

Could anyone give me some assistance on this? Apologies if this sounds too basic but I am not too experienced on Linux

Right-click on your alsa mixer notification speaker icon and go to "Open volume control." Make sure PCM and Front are set to max volume.

Just double-checked now; it's all to the max.

I have the same problem with VAIO VGN-G118GN. Trafficman, I believe my hardware is the same as yours. Is your problem resolved yet?

Similiar problem with Vaio VGN-G11XRN/B.
ALC codec is ALC262 on Intel 82801G (ICH7).

Linux distro is Gentoo, kernel is 2.6.28 with Gentoo patches.

The sound through headphone jack works fine and is adjustable through alsamixer. The speaker sound is extremely low.

Here's a quicklist what DOESN'T help:
* Recompiling alsa as modules instead of kernel static built-ins
* Putting any "model=" of available ALC262 model presets to modprobe.d
* Putting any sliders to max under any of the above "model" configurations

Under model=auto if one runs 'alsactl init' the output is suspicious:
Unknown hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Realtek ALC262" "HDA:10ec0262,104d1800,00100100 HDA:14f12c06,104d1700,00100000" "0x104d" "0x8208"
Hardware is initialized using a guess method

Looks like no help available.. About referring us to anywhere else for resolution? I'm into trying other OS. The following OS DOES NOT work :

General Failure

This is an issue I have experienced with every sound card/chip I've been using under linux: The signal coming out of the card is always stronger under windows. The drivers work, though, and they seem to work for you as well, just not as loud as under windows. I never found a solution to this but I also haven't been looking too hard.

A place to ask about this would be the alsa mailing list. I'd be really interested in any results.

I've posted the question with the description of symptoms and hardware to ALSA mailing list a week ago and it was silently ignored. So I assume the problem is either too trivial to bother answering or too tough for them to deal with

I too have the same problem on a sony vgn b1xp!!!

Having to go back to windows just to get sound is about as fun as sticking needles in your eyes!!

Any pros out there that can save us from the Microsoft Slavery?
