I have for some time tried to get the sound working on my system. I have tried to install drivers and check the sound options, but nothing is working. I have also tried to install a new linux kernel, but i still got no support for sound.
Im using Debian sarge 3.1 and an asus computer model w5. Any help to this problem would be appericiated. I would really like to get some sound here, but just cant get it to work at all.
hondo, Probably snd-intel8x0 will work with your sound card.

good luck.
These are useless questions.
Are we dealing with on-board sound from either Intel, VIA, nVidia, SIS, or ATI is a much better question. Also did you use alsamixer to check if the volume settings are unmuted and set it at a decent level.
The InterNet is a terrible thing to waste. Lets arrest Bill Gates and shut down Microsoft immediately.
I just want to say that I would not like to leave that many people unemployed in Seattle and elsewhere. If if weren't for that I am all for your opinion.

Its an ASUS laptop with integrated sound card. I dont really know what kind of sound card it is, i have checked "Info center" in linux with information about all hardware and in windows in "device manager", but i cant see what the sound card is. The sound card is there though, its working in windows, but not in linux as said. I think the sound card is intel or realtek.
I have checked the volume manager and nothing there is muted besides the microphone and things like that.
update: I tried alsaconf (this was the first time after new kernel installation) and it found the sound card and loaded a driver for it which was snd-hda-intel. There is still no sound.
lspci -v as root should tell you about your sound hardware.
Then try running alsaconf (again, as root)
Then try running alsamixer (press h for help).
Hope this helps.

I tried this. In the output from lspci i got this from the sound information:
Intel Corp. 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller
I then tried to run alsaconf which loaded a driver and builded a sound card database or something like that. Seems like it find the card though and it says it is loading a driver for it, but it still does work at all. Someone who has any suggestions ? Thanks for your help.
UPDATE: I finally got the sound working! Thanks for the help.
I first upgraded the linux kernel and ran alsaconf, but there was no change. Then i ran alsaconf again and then alsamixer as root. Then i checked the volume manager which somehow had change a little, it was displaying a little different i think. I saw the volume was for some reason now all turned down, i turned it up with no better result i though, but then i turned it almost all the way up and could hear some sounds and could play music too. I guess it was the upgrade to a new linux kernel and running alsaconf & alsamixer as root.
