Sound for Linux...

I have been trying to get the sound to work under Linux and am having some difficulties... I am running Slackware 10.2 with Kernel 2.4.31. I used the bare kernel from the install CD that I downloaded. I tried using a program called "noatun" as a regular user and it appeared to play, but no sound came out, so I tried as root from a shell, and got the following:

bash-3.00# /opt/kde/bin/noatun
kbuildsycoca running...
Launched ok, pid = 11172
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:802snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
KWrited - Listening on Device /dev/pts/3
sh: artsmessage: command not found

Any ideas...? Thank you very much for your help
