Sound failed for no reason

I use Mandriva linux 2006 on 2.6.12 kernel. My sound card was detected and had been working for the past few weeks. But today, wen I booted up, it failed for no reason.

I complied a new kernel ( 2.6.16) and wen I booted using that kernel to my mandriva, the sound is working.

How can I restore the sound of the previous kernel. What could be the problem???

Please help me out.............
Thanx in advance

Is your system detecting your sound card or not ?

ok.
probably your kernel is not loading the module for it.
boot into the new kernel, check which module your sound card is using (#lsmod)
reboot to old kernel and insert the module into kernel
#insmod <module name without '.o'>

e.g #insmod snd-ac97-codec
