Would you suggest contacting someone in charge to report them of the possibility of this being a fix, and thus possibly edit the Arch Wiki page accordingly?

i strongly suggest opening an account with archwiki, and taking the appropriate steps. i'm not sure how exactly, but it must be possible to propose a change, or discuss the point or sth.
it might be a bit of a hurdle, learning how a wiki works and finding the right way to contribute, but i think it's worth it - archwiki is a precious resource, well worth preserving & keeping it up-to-date.
I'm a linux newbie and it's late so I may not think clearly, but could someone explain in simple words what is the fix and how to apply it?
I know how to enter alsamixer and move through options but I never saw anything there that could help.
In alsamixer when I press F6 it shows:
- (default)
0 HDA Intel PCH
enter device name
It seems that system doesn't detect my SoundBlaster X-Fi card anyway...
I have by default default which gives master bar. When chosing HDA Intel, there are LOT of bars:
Master, PCM, Surround, S/PDIF, S/PDIF D, S/PDIF 1, S/PDIF 2, S/PDIF 1, Crystali, Dialog P, Equalize, HP/Speak, HP/Speak, PlayEnha, Smart Vo, X-Bass
If I had a clue what is what... However aside Master and PCM most is zeroed or muted. I can't rise them above zero, but can unmute, but with zero value it doesn't do anything.

These are the values you are interested in toggling/enabling, with the 'm' key probably. I will leave it to OP to explain exactly what else has to be done (maybe something with pulseaudio control).

That's to be expected if you're just using analog stereo output.

No. 'HDA Intel PCH' is your Creative chip. It's compliant with Intel HDA standard. If you look at the alsa info that OP gave, you will see it lists the chip with the same name. To verify, look at:
I unmuted HP/Speak and everything else but I can't raise anything above zero other then Master and PCM. When pluging to one of the jacks, sound in laptop goes away but speakers or headphones are still silent (maybe because they are at zero level).
Do I have to install some creative drivers to make it work if so, how to find it - google doesn't show me anything obvious? I just have sound by default from system install so maybe that's the problem.
I take it that this is because you own an Alienware 15 R2, as opposed to my Alienware 15 (early 2015). To be sure, you can compare your outputs of lspci and lsusb to the ones posted on the Alienware 15 page of the Arch Wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Alienware_15
You should also do the same in case you haven't, Tyrnyn, just to make sure.
Given the fact we own different versions of the same laptop, the process I have used may not work for you, but I am explaining it nonetheless.
I open alsamixer. By pressing F6, i get to choose the sound card. I have 3 options:
- (default)
- HDA Intel HDMI
- HDA Intel PCH
I choose the third option that I have listed, and am presented with several options. The list of options is the following:
First of all, michaldybczak, i should note that my output of grep -ir codec /proc/asound is not the same as yours:
Yeah, you're right. You have Intel Haswell HDMI while I have Intel Skylake HDMI and that may do the whole difference. My model is Alienware 17 R3, unfortunately rarer then 15 version nowadays so things that work for 15 are not working for 17. And there is a thing of a release time. My model is R3 from 2016 and most articles refer to older models.
So far I haven't found any solution, at least on Alsa and that forces me to use windows more .
Anyway, if someone reading this thread later and will know update on Alienware 17 or R3 models, please, let me and the readers know. Thanks
