sound distortion on laptop speakers

a few days ago my laptop speakers worked just fine, i'm running debian 6,
however i started using vlc, vlc has the hability to amplify the sound up to
400%, before using it my speakers could go well without noise anything i
played from youtube to mp3 sounded loud and fine, but now
after using vlc a few times the sound is normally distorted and i need to
lower the master volume a lot to get a clean sound, i have played with the
kde mixer controls and the vlc controls without luck

is there some other configurations to bring the sound levels back to normal?
is it possible to uninstall some linux component (tried on vlc no luck) to
bring the default configurations back?

thanks for your help

as your regular user ( not root) in a terminal.
At the top left of your terminal will be a keystroke to show all. F6 I think but I am not sure. Try adjusting the levels there. If you find one that works change alsamixer to use that as default, perhaps.

alsactl store
As root will save the settings you have made and load them at each boot.

thanks for your reply!

i will try that right now,
i was thinking about the actual software stack that debian implements,
there must be something there, i think it looks like this

i reinstalled alsa a couple hours ago and it sounds the same
i dont know if there is something you can tweak in the firmware
what do you think about????
