I don't see a sound card listed in the lspci. I am assuming it is a cs4236B ISA card? If so run this command as root. ' /sbin/modprobe snd-cs4236 ' and see what happens. Post errors if any.

So you say when you issed the modprobe command it just came back to the next line. It did not post any errors. If so do a /sbin/lsmod and see if it is loaded. If so then run the command ' alsamixer ' to see if the c1 card is seen now. There would be volume bars for master and pcm. Raise them if at zero. Also make sure there are no MM at the top of the bar. It means muted. Hit ' m ' key to unmute when at the bar.
If no device c1 found then I am at a lost.
To see if you have the modules use the command
ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/sound/isa/cs423x

This is /etc/modprobe.conf file....
I think something is wrong here
Code:
CODE]alias eth0 3c59x
alias snd-card-0 snd-cs4236
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-cs4236 index=0
remove snd-cs4236 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store 0 >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-cs4236
Thats modprobe.conf file
?[/CODE]
I'll be back soon.

try this
use module options something like this
cs423x
io=0x534
irq=5
dma=1
dma2=0
mpuio=0x330
mpuirq=9
in a form like
modprobe cs4232 io=0x530 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=5
note the io=0x530 or 534 as i have seen both
hope that helps

Thanks all of you ..I decided to go for kernel compiling as this old stuff doesnt work..
then consider buying a cheap PCI card if that doesnt help..
I have seen some really cheap cards today at a shop.
1.RY74R Wavetable card,with unlabelled white box.
2.Typhoon >Acoustic 4. PCI card.
I just wondering if they supported by LINUX COMMUNITY.
THANKS AGAIN

I go with a basic Sound Blaster Live one. It uses emu10k1 module.
I think the issue you may be having after talking to a friend is the ISA cards use OSS instead of the ALSA sound interface. So if you are trying to use ALSA then you need to have the old OSS in the kernel built as well as Alsa kernel parts. Then Alsa external source files need to be recompiled to support OSS through Alsa. Since Oss is getting old then it is normally being left out of the Alsa builds.
