Sound Card Issue on Ubuntu installed on Laptop

I have ubuntu dual installed w/ Vista Ultimate on my laptop. The sounds works through the built in computer speakers, but when I try to plug anything into the headphone/output jack it still plays through the computer speaker.

What version of Ubuntu ? Do you use alsa or pulseaudio ? I used to solve this issue myself by downloading the lates alsa drivers and alsa-utils and compiling them. Fixed it for me, but then Ubuntu switched to pulseaudio, and I know nothing about it. Sold that laptop, just have the desktop now, and everything just worked out of the box now, so I haven't had to learn how pulseaudio works.

well, I believe it's ALSA, but under the sound options most everything is set to autoconfig.

I'm not very good at installing things on linux... I'm just not very good with it, I use it mainly for school for my CS classes.

I'm using ubuntu 8.04.1
