Sound card installation question

Hi all folks,

Gentoo 1.4
Linux version 2.4.20-gentoo-r7
genkernel-1.8
Creative Sound Blaster Live.

I have 2 documents in front of me
1) http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml
2) Advance Linux Sound Architecture
//www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=Creative+Labs&card=Soundblaster+Live&chip=EMU10K1&module=emu10k1

I hestate to follow which of them.

This is the first time for me to install this sound card on Gentoo but not the first time on Linux. Before I just followed "Advance Linux Sound Architecture"

I found the alsa-drive already there
/lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1

I tried to follow Gentoo's document
Code listing 2.1: Kernel configuration
# cd /usr/src/linux
# cp .config ~/

I did not know what to enter here ".config ~/"

Kindly advise. Thanks in advance.

B.R.
