Sound Card Driver- snd-cmipci
I recently upgrade from Mandrake 9.1 to 10
The sound card driver that it found is "snd-cmipci" but the sound quality is so bad that it sound like telephone quality I only gets better when I tone down the PCM volume from 77 to around 10, but it still done sound like what I had been enjoyed in Mandrake 9.1 , In 9.1 the sound quality even sounds better than in win98se. I amjust wondering if anyone had this type of problem ? can anyone direct me to a solution to it ? The following is what I had been came up so far. 1) go to www.c-media.com.tw and download the driver and recompile the kernel <--- which I had neber done it b4. <--- anyone good at back up old kernel and recompile ? 2) switch back to old kernel .... Can I just use the old kernel that mandrake back up on the lilo list directly ?? or the old driver had been deleted as soon as I had upgrade to 10 ? <--- not sure how linux works =) ... to my experience with windows when upgrade to a new version, old driver in the system will no longer exist in the system any help is appreciated thx |
the old drivers are probably still there, in /lib/modules/<kernel-version>

Wait, stop, stop. I had this prob. Just use the OSS driver and the sound is wonderful.
I use cmpci instead of snd-cmpci. THis is what my .aumixrc looks like: vol:100:100:P synth:0:0:P pcm:100:100:P speaker:100:100:R line:0:0:P mic:0:0:R cd:100:100:P line1:80:80:R |
I saw some of the users on a forum that change the driver from snd-cmipci to cmipci and it works for them but unfortuntely it doen't work for me =*( ... instead I hear no sound at all with volume tune up to 77 already
but thanks for your help anyway =) By the way , I just reboot to the old linux kernel that Mandrake backup while doing the upgrade (from 9.1 to 10) , and the sound is perfect , stero quality ;) Man they should give me the option of not upgrading the kernel while people doing the upgrade I am so surprice that there is no one complain on the new 2.6 kernel , especially people who are using c-media sound card... there is virtually not much forum message on the internet who have this type of problem ?? <--- how strange am i the only one using this sound card ? =) IS there any "esier" way to change the kernel sound module from the new one to the old ? hopefully only involves replacing files =) <--- which I don't think its possible any tip that I should know about b4 I start compiling for the first time will be much appreciated =), er ...... how do u compile with the new kernel with and old sound module driver ? (new mixed with old <--- custom kernel ??) |
Maybe you should try using the 2.4 kernel with Mandy 10. The lack of sound might be able to be fixed with the correct mixer volumes and a reboot. Did you try importing the mixer settings that I posted?
|
yeah ... i did , its the same .... only the "bass" of the sound gets louder.
I think it's not the mixer's problem it's the its the new sound module from kernel 2.6, just need to find a way tyo get the old module compiled to the new kernel, then the problem is solved =) |
