Sound Blaster Live AND Red Hat Linux 9

Greetings!

I have installed Red Hat Linux 9 on my machine. The OS has successfully detected the Sound Blaster Live sound card and I can hear the test sound sample via the Soundcard Detection wizard. However, I can not hear any sound when I play an audio cd. I have changed the volume settings but to no avail.

I have no prior experience with Linux. Any detailed assistance would be appreciated.

thanks

Hi!!!

There's a known problem with Redhat 8.0 and 9.0 which is the lack of plugin to play mp3's.
I'm not sure if this also applies to audio cd's, but you could try to download the plugin and install it. It's quite simple to install it... Download it from here:

http://havardk.xmms.org/dist/xmms-1.2.7-rh8-rh9-rpm/

Then do as the following at any konsole:

Code:

su root
(type your password)

Then go where you've saved this plugin and type:
Code:

rpm -ivh xmms-mpg123-1.2.7-21.i386.rpm
Well, as I said, that would install the mp3's plugin. Try to play an audio CD anyway and see if it helps. you could go into your programs menu and choose any cdplayer available there or simply type "gnome-cd" at the console...

If still does not work, I would like to ask some things:

1 - Have you been able to play audio CD's with the very same configuration you are now, but with another OS?

2 - When you've installed you sound card, there's a very little cable which comes from the CD-Rom player to the Sound Card... That cable is the one responsible to play audio CD's in your computer. Did you put it there :)

Well, if it still does not help :) I know nothing more to help ya, but I wish you good luck :)

Hello Megaman X !
Thank you very much for your time and the detailed instruction.

1 - Have you been able to play audio CD's with the very same configuration you are now, but with another OS?

Yes, the machine dual boots with Windows XP Pro

2 - When you've installed you sound card, there's a very little cable which comes from the CD-Rom player to the Sound Card... That cable is the one responsible to play audio CD's in your computer. Did you put it there

Yes, I noticed that cable was missing all together so I hooked a spare one from the CD-ROM to the Sound Card.
Now, I am able to listen to audio CDs and streaming audio via ReaL Player 8 while I learn to use Linux.
I have not installed the MP3 plug-in yet but I will try doing it later on today.

Once again, thank you.
