Sound & Resolution problems on RH Dell 3000

Hey everyone, I have just reformatted my fourth computer, a Dell Dimension 3000 with RedHat 9.0. This one has an Intel Celeron 2.66 ghz cpu, 512 megs Ram, and a 40 gb partition set to Linux. The rest goes to the Windows boot.

I'm having some trouble getting my moniteor to function correctly, it won't leave 640x480 resolution or 16 bit color. I've adjusted the settings time after time, with nothing happening. I also repeatedly get this error message at startup saying that my X window server is messed up, i need to enter the root password, and then it finds my Intel 680 or something video card, if i'm interpreting it right. My Windows XP also doesn't go beyond the same settings, if it makes any difference. The monitor is a Dell E173FP LCD screen.

Also, my soundcard hasn't been registered by Linux yet. I tried running the SoundCard detection, nothing happened. At the moment, i have no idea what the sound card is. It may be listed at Dell, though i'm not sure.

Thanks!

Try using a newer Linux distribution, like Fedora Core4, Suse 9.3/10.0, or (my personal favorite) Mandriva 2006.

The problem is that Redhat 9 is significantly older than the hardware, thus won't detect the hardware properly. The spec's on your system (according to Dell), is integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2, and integrated SoundBlaster Live. Both will work properly with a later distribution.

You may need to download the graphics driver from Intel, but other than that, the three distro's listed above will work (they worked in the testing lab I used to work at).
