I am wondering if anyone has tried (good or bad) a Sony DRU 810A drive in Linux? My boss is considering picking up a few for our lab and while I don't think there would be a problems with this new drive as some older ones are using xcdroast just fine he wants to be sure. I think he plans on buying 4 so telling him they are okay when they may be proven not to be is something i'm trying to avoid.
Over the past few years I've had horrible results from Sony products.
I have these sitting in my office that have stopped working:
Sony DRU-500AX (DVD+/-RW) -- stopped working
Sony CRX230A (CD-RW) -- stopped working
Sony VIAO PCG-FXA49 notebook (southbridge chip burned from overheating)
There is another burner but I can't locate it right now, so I am not
including it as I'm not certain of the model number.
I quit buying Sony products. These were all just out of warranty, and
Sony wanted ~ $700 USD to "replace" the motherboard on the notebook.
They aren't setup to just replace the southbridge chip.
Now the only drives I'm purchasing from my own use, or for computers
that I build, are Asus, Pioneer, and Samsung.

I second that. I pretty much stick to Asus and Pioneer, though I did have 1 good Sony.
Anyway, directly answering your question:
You should be fine using the DRU810A, shouldn't be any reason you can't use it in Linux.
I recently bought a Sony DRU-810A so I could download the Knoppix 4.0 DVD and make a copy. I collect distros for no apparent reason.
I currently run zenwalk on my home desktop, but it does not see this DVD player when I put a movie DVD in. I tried mounting the darn thing without success.
Generally, zenwalk is good about seeing stuff mounted on the fly like usb drives, but in this case, it don't see this DVD player.
What do I need to do to make this DVD player read a commercial DVD?
