I recently received a Sony DRU-710A (their latest double layer, dual format DVD burner) as a gift.
Before I install it I wanted to make sure that it "works" under linux. I am using Mandrake 10 as my linux distro and have not made any changes to the the required software (kernel and Cd Burning software) other than updates that have come from mandrake (mostly security fixes).
By "works" I mean,
Can be used as a normal DVD drive
Can write CD-R/CD-RW disks
Can wirte DVD+-R/+-RW Disks
A bonus would be the ability to write the double layer disks.
Is there a minimal version of the kernel that I need to be able to support this? How about the related authoring tools (cd-record/dvd+rw-tools/K3b)?
Thanks for the links. My assumption is/was that it works (maybe needing newer versions of software) but I was double checking to see if someone had bad issues (like the drive that needed a firmware upgrade to work with linux that came out earlier this year).
tvandegr, I'm also using Mandrake 10.0 and thinking of buying that drive. Please post your results, especially wheather you get it to burn dual layer discs.
I have successfuly burnt a DVD-R disk under linux Mandrake 10.0. I do not have any DVD+R or dual layer disks so I have not tried to burn them. So if what ships with Mandrake 10 cannot burn these types, I would assume that all you need is a software upgrade of the required tools.
tvandegr; Question? what does the documentation on dvd drv say? from researchng dvd dr some may read -r ,+r &
-+rw, so which does yours mention & say?
the os`s interface will work with what hardware interface provides. check that out.
