Some adivce on installation, drivers, etc.

Right, I've just got a new external serial modem as a few people have said to me that they work a whole lot better with Linux than a Winmodem. Now Suse detects my old modem but it don't detect this one. Do I need to install anything?

The modem is made by Sitecom with a Generic chip (?) on COM 1. Windows XP says it's a 56K external modem[CL].

Any advice on setting it up please?

Linux may just not be checking for hardware attached to the serial port.

If SuSE has some sort of modem setup wizard you could just tell it the modem is on COM1. Maybe that's all it needs to know.
