Does anyone have a recommendation on a Socket 775 motherboard with on board video that they recommend with good linux compatibility?

Full-size ATX or micro-ATX? What sort of video outputs do you need?

Latest chipset with on-board intel graphics is g33. Not sure if this is fully supported yet, but if not it can't be far away.

Well lucky me. I just so happened to order a board that uses the chipset

I decided to try the Gigabyte GA-G33M-S2H.

Thanks

could you post back results of using this board in linux? an interesting thing about the GA-G33M-S2H is that it has HDMI. is that supported?

on Xorg mailing list suggests it is supported but may have some problems (these boards have only been out about 3 months).

Note that the long PCI-express slot on this board is a x4 rather than the x16 usually available for add-on video cards. I don't know if this causes problems if you want to use a separate video card. The other GA-G33M variants have x16.

I havent received the board yet but will post how it works once I get it. unfortuantly i do not have anything to test the hdmi on. just got it for the vga and dvi.

And also it does have a PCI express x16 slot. Not quite sure what you are talking about. It is capable of also being x4, but it is x16.

I have been researching g33 boards, as I want to buy one myself. Check the detailed specs on Gigabyte's website where it says:

"1 x PCI Express x16 slot supporting PCI Express x4 mode".

I am not at all well-up on the relevant tech, but if you look at the PCI express Wikipedia article for example you will find some explanation. Anyway, it does not seem to be the same as standard x16 PCI express. Maybe someone better-informed could clarify this.

Most likely not a problem if you only want onboard graphics.

It will support up to x4. all it takes is a quick read of the manual.

It does support x16 cards, but data transfer will be at x4 speeds. From the Wikipedia article:
Quote:
While a 16 lane card cannot be used in an 8 lane slot it can be used in a 16 lane slot with only 8 lanes connected. The number of lanes are "negotiated" during power-up or explicitly during operation.
and
Quote:
A slot of a large physical size (e.g. x16) can be wired electrically with fewer lanes (e.g. x1 or x8) as long as it provides the power and ground connections required by the larger physical slot size.
So an 8800GTX Ultra GPU would work in a four lane slot, but may be significantly slowed down, as the slot would be approximately half as fast as the fastest AGP standard.

All x16 slots will take x4 cards, so why would the Gigabyte spec mention 'x4 mode' on this model (and not on their other G33 boards) if it was not some kind of restriction? I've seen posts in other forums that also commented that the physical x16 on this board is electrically a x4.

EDIT: Sorry dr_j, your edit crossed over my reply.
