Question smartctl hdd test results interpretation please!

Hi all,

I've run a test on this spare laptop drive I'm planning to use to try out a new distro, but have been unable to glean much from the results. Can some kind soul perform an interpretation and inform me if this drive is ok, not bad, or on its last legs?

It's very late here now so I won't be able to respond further 'til tomorrow, should any queries arise...

Cheers,
CC.

No reallocated sectors and no reallocation pending, only about 4300 hours in use, I personally would use that drive.

It's an oldie but a goodie.
No Current_Pending_Sector or Offline_Uncorrectable sectors.

This is the only attribute that is concerning. I recommend you disable power saving mode on the HDD, otherwise it will keep spinning itself down, and it's only rated at so many spin-ups. This is a common problem with laptop HDDs. So run this on every boot:
Code:
hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda
This attribute is NOT pre-fail, and the other attributes look good, so you can use it for quite a while. I recommend running SMART long tests (smartctl -t long /dev/sda) at set intervals to help detect future failure potential. This does NOT eliminate the possibility of failure without any warning whatsoever, which can happen, so backup your data.
