Slow preformance without wifi card in system

I have a HP laptop running red hat 8.0, i usually use a wifi connection on the system via a orinoco wifi card. Sometimes i have the need to use the units built in lan connection as the wifi is not avaliable everywhere. When i use the LAN line it connects fine, and transfers data across the lan port without problems. but some programs dont boot due to the laptop running so slowly. anyone have any ideas as to why the system runs fine with the wifi card connected to an acess point, but is very bogged down without it? by the way, im a newbie. Thanks guys!

actually, after a little more investigation, it seems the onboard lan port is causing the slowdowns. on that note, any ideas?

when exactly do you get the slow down? when you are downloading large files or all the time?
