Slackware 10 Mouse doesnt work

I am using Slackware 10.
The mouse works perfectly with GPM in the console.
When I start X the mouse doesn't work. The mouse cursor shows but when I touch the mouse the cursor moves immediately to the upper right-hand corner and stays.

What can I do to fix this?

gpm is like this:
gpm -m /dev/mouse -t imps2

it is set the same in xorg.conf

thanks

Use a different protocol in xorg.conf.

I tried that with AUTO, PS2, and IMPS2.

Are there any others I should try? Why does it work with gpm and not X?

Try changing /dev/mouse to /dev/psaux in the xorg.conf file. gpm is not really X related. It may not work either. gpm is an utility to help you copy from one xterm to the other xterm.

None of these have worked. I have tried many many different protocol/device combinations...
