slackware 10.2 r8169


Hi.
I have installed Slackware 10.2, kernel 2.4.31 from scratch.
I had a NIC installed from the begining, but it wasn't detected. It uses r8169 driver, but I can't get it to work.
It is not mentioned when I use lspci. There is no eth0 when I type ifconfig -a. And when I try
modprobe r8169 I get:

post your .config file from /boot
maybe the default ide-kernel does not have the modudle/driver enabled and you may need to re-compile the kernel to get it working.........

It is compiled in the 2.6.13 stock kernel, so compiling the driver in instead of making a module might help.

Here is the piece of information that you might be looking for at the /boot/config:

CONFIG_R8169=m

I've used make xconfig to compile the module r8169 (and also CRC, since it was asking for it before, when I tried modconf r8169) in the kernel. Then I used:
> make dep
> make clean
> make bzImage
> make modules
> cp /lib/modules/2.4.31 /lib/modules/2.4.31_old
> make modules_install
> cp /boot/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz_old
> cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz
> vi /etc/lilo.conf

adding the lines:
image = /boot/vmlinuz_old
root = /dev/sda1
read-only

> /sbin/lilo

The recent compiled kernel panics: it can't "mount root fs". It asks to
"please append a correct 'root=' boot option".

I should say my HD is a SATA, and thus I 've used sata.i when installing Linux for the first time. I guess the recently-compiled kernel forgets that?!
Then I have to boot using the old kernel....

I've also tried to manually edit the /boot/config line I mentioned above and change "m" for "y", nut of course it didn't work....

Start from the config of your old or stock kernel and weed out unnessecary drivers. Once you've borked a kernel config that badly, it is very difficult to go back to a working config cause of all the options in the kernel.

problem solved, but I cheated!

Guys, I thank you for your advices, but it was way easier to change the board. Now I'm using a 3COM, which was automatically detected by Fedora.
