Slack9.0 - fresh install, no sound

i've installed linux a number of times before and often come across odd problems. just to get slackware to install i had to feed it memory addresses for my hdd. but this is the first time i've encountered any audio problems. i simply have no sound. i don't know if linux has found my sound card (Creative AudioPCI ES1371/ES1373 WDM), and have no clue how to figure it out. help? thanks ahead of time.

/sbin/lsmod

Will list all of the currently loaded drivers. Hotplugging should have seen it... still, a bit odd. The module for the card should be, surprise "es1371", if its not loaded, try to load it with:

/sbin/modprobe es1370

If that brings up sound, go under /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and uncomment the line with modprobe es1371, if there isn't one in there, just create a line for it... anywhere in that file really.

Cheers,

Finegan

that worked, thanks. now how do i shut off those horrid kde sound effects?

Sorry, I am not in KDE right now but if you go to your "control center" go down to "sounds" and you will see a list of all of the obnoxious KDE sounds with a check box next to each. It should be self-explanitory at that point.
