simple questions
 

i have a built in intel 82845g/gl vedio card

i want to know which one is responsble for making it work on linux
is it the kernle or x server

somepeople told me that it will be wokring on kernel 2.6 and someothers told me on the new version of x

so can anyone help me plz

The simple answer is both.

First there is the Linux kernel side of it so that the kernel can even talk to the graphics card properly, because this isn't just a vid chipset issue, this is integrated into the board. In order for the GL or any of the DRI to work, the kernel module is going to have to be straightened out. 2.4.18 was lacking, and I know there were 3 fixes between 2.4.19 and 2.4.20 added, as to what they do to improve performace, I don't know, they're in the changelogs. Anything that is currently in the 2.5.x tree as far as fixes is bound to be backported to 2.4.x probably long before a distro releases with 2.6.x, so who knows, maybe 2.4.21 in a couple of months...

XFree currently doesn't have drivers for it either, or at least not good support as far as I know, and that's even up to 4.2.1, which is the newest and Mandrake 9.0 I think is the only distro to have released upon it.

There is a hack to get everything to work well, or at least bearably on the Intel site. Its to get everything sorted out using vesa, post back if you can't find it and I'll dredge it up from my sent mail folder.

i tried vesa but i don't know the right config to make the card work properly

everytime i choose vesa driver the installition hangs
