silicon image 3512 and any distro

I have a Gigabyte 7n400 pro 2
I've tried most new distros on a Seagate 120 gig SATA drive and cannot get it to install linux. I bought Suse 9.1. It won't install either.

If I use a seperate Silicon Image 3112 controller card, it installs complete.
I am inclined to think that the problem is in the bios on motherboards using the 3512. I brought my motherboard to Gigabyte and the tech had the same trouble on other motherboards with that chip but not with mobo's with the 3112. There is something in the driver supplied with the distros.
Probably the driver needs to be tweaked. or better yet bios updates for the
motherboards.

I know others have had similar problems. Any body have other solutions?

I have an onboard SATA controller from Silicon Image too. And it just works with RedHat 8, there is no newer driver for that [badword] thing!
(It's stupid to run an AMD64 with a 32bit OS...)

Due I have a Barebone, there is no PCI slot left, so I'm runnig this old, but supported Distro.
I will never buy anything from Silicon Image nor NVIDIA !

You can try to replace the mainboard with another controller, replace the SATA HDD with a ATA or live with the seperate controller card.

Gentoo and FreeBSD run just fine on my Gigabyte K8N Pro, using the on-board Sil 3512 controller and an 80Gb Maxtor SATA HDD. In fact, i believe any new distro w/ a 2.6.x kernel should be able to recognize it, using the sata_sil driver.

I have the 3512 card attached with a Promise Tech IDE RAID controller. I have been having a problem with the SI card and my kernel telling me that the IO address for one of the ide ports is already used. The kernel then tells me durring bootup that the interupt for the harddrive attached is lost.
