Unhappy Showing Device Status as Unknown Device for all hardware

Hello friends,

I am in a serious problme after RHEL 4 installation on my laptop, which is HP dv6000 series(HP DV6138ea).

I downloaded the drivers for Display(Nvidia Go 7400), Intel (R) PRO/1000 PL. But I can see the all device's status as Un knows devices. Eg. When i go to the redhat menu and check Network Setting, i can see the Device, but it is showing unknown device on the name also. I am not sure whats the exact problme.

I have my sound card detected as Conexant High Defenition Audio on Windows XP, but its not detected on my redhat. Whats the solution for it? where i can find a driver for it. I need to have atleast the Netowrk Cards(Both wireless, and the ethernet) to be confgured perfectlly yo start my further learning. Please suggest me what should i do?

Getting links to proper drivers and installation stpes will be fine help to me. Please give me help to resolve these problmes.

Also i have three options on the Redhat Boot menu. One ption is "Windows" other two are
1. Redhat RHED***.smp
2. Redhat RHEL.

whats the menaing of "smp". is it multiple processor. Whatever, if i take the smp, it will show kernel error. So i am using the other option to log on.
Please advice me..

It would probably be a good idea to use a different and more up-to-date distribution such as Fedora, Madriva or something like Kanotix. RHEL is really nice in the data center, but isn't an ideal desktop because it targets stability more than cutting edge support for new hardware, and the dv6000 is an example of cutting edge hardware. Also, search for dv6000 linux in google and you'll find some tutorials / howtos on how to setup linux on the machine and possible problems + solutions that you'll run into.
