Setup for Visioneer OneTouch 7300USB

I am using Mepis 6.5 as my operating system. I'm happy with it, and it's worked well with all of my hardware except the aforementioned scanner. In most respects I've been much happier with the Mepis product than I was with the Windows XP product and its companion software.

In attempting to set up my scanner, I've used Synaptic to download SANE from the Mepis repository. I've also installed GIMP and KOOKA on the machine. None of the software products works with the scanner even though the specific scanner appears in the list of supported products. When I load Kooka, I get a screen that has several options for setting up the system, but there are no menus for operating the system. With Gimp, the system apparently recognizes the scanner correctly; however, when I attempt to operate it, I receive an informative message: "An error has occurred." The SANE products (SANE, XSANE, and INSANE) do not recognize the scanner. At the moment, the only way I'm able to operate the scanner is to keep my laptop on Windows and use it for scanner operations. Obviously, this is not the solution that I'd like to live with. Has anyone been able to successfully set up a like scanner with Mepis or Ubuntu?

Thanks much,
