setting a minimum mouse double-click speed

I think it's because of the mouse, which is quite old, and this happens on Suse, Slackware and windoze...
It sometimes gives a double click instead of just one... eg I double-click to run an app, it opens 2 instances (KDE is set to double click), I click to open a menu, it opens and then quickly closes, etc. This happens just occasionally.
It's a wireless optical mouse. I can see various reasons for this happening, all related to the hardware.
The question is... is there somehow I can set a minimum double-click speed? (except making a new kernel driver, of course ) As in... if the click succession is shorter than an interval of time, it is considered only a single click...
Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, I use KDE... and it doesn't seem to have this in the GUI... Just a maximum double click speed...
