Serial to usb


Hi,
I have a serial to usb cable. I would like to communicate between serial dev and usb dev. I am using RHEL5 and x86_32.

From what i can understand you need to communicate with a device through serial-usb connection.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minicom


Code:
dmesg |grep usb
Look for tty on usb, something like ttyUSB1 or ttyUSB0, then configure minicom

minicom -s

Thank you very much for the reply. I am using picocom.Should I open 2 terminal 1)ttyUSB and 2)ttyS0

That would depend which end is plugged into device you are connecting from. If the USB end of the cable is on your PC then it's ttyUSB. Or ttyS0 if you have the serial end.

erm, why would you do that, what is it you are trying to do? Please provide more info on your project.

For my project I am suppose to write a usb driver for arm(I know this is mighty task). So my seniors advised me to start learning about the working of usb driver by starting of with Serial to usb.Please would you recommend me some good study material for writing usb driver.

I'd ask the teachers for advise on where to start and literature required. Writing drivers is beyond my knowledge.
If the teachers are no help then turn to google, look through source code of USB stack in your own distro. Quick google search:
