serial port not responding

I have an Embest AX4510 evaluation board that I'm trying to communicate with via serial port. It was working previously, then I rebooted my computer and it stopped. Let me say that I am quite sure that there is nothing wrong with my serial port because it works like a dream in HyperTerminal (Windows). I've tried Mincom, Seyon, and C-Kermit (not that it should matter what program I use). Normally, when I fire up Minicom and listen on /dev/ttyS0, as soon as I turn on or reset the board I get some output on the screen, but not anymore. There's no error messages of any type and I'm quite sure I've configured the serial port correctly (19200 8N1, no flow control). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Two ideas:
- first check whether the module serial is loaded (lsmod if it is loadable or dmesg if it is statically compiled)
- check whether the number under 4 (for ttyS0) in /proc/interrupts is increasing when the connected device is sending the data

Bye,
Robert

Thanks for the quick reply, but inexplicably I've solved the problem. It turns out that, for some reason, if the JTAG cable is connected (via parallel port), it suppresses output from the board via the serial console (Linux only). As soon as I unplugged the JTAG cable I got output again.
