Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Seagate SATA 8m hard drives not recognized by RH9

Hello all,

Another newbie question (after my dreaded attempt to burn a linux ISO image onto a CD).

RH 9 for some reason doesn't recognize my Seagate SATA 8M HDD's. I have gone through the Seagate site but haven't been able to find the right drivers. Just out of curiousity I loaded the Win2k installer which can very easily recognize the drives which means my drives are working.

Here is my h/w config:

1. ASUS P4P800 Deluxe motherboard with Intel P4 800 MHZ
2. Liteon (JLMS XJ - HD 166S) DVD ROM.
3. 2 x Seagate SATA 8m hard drives (ST3120026AS).
4. 1 GB Kingston RAM.
5. ATI 9200SE Radeon Video card.

Cheers

It seems Mandrake Linux 9.2 doesn't recognize Seagate SATA 8M HDD's either, at least without knowing how to manually configure it entering

base_address ( a number)
controller_type (a number)
irq (number)

which involves finding some esoteric 6-10 hexadecimal code with the prefix "0x" which someone who reads these forums ought to know exactly how to find, but aren't currently available to to explain right now.

I wish I could do them some kind of favor, if they would tell me.

Once again: This does not have anything to do with the drives themselves, you need to be able to use the controller in order to access the drives. The P4P800 uses the Intel ICH5R controller and a helpful person has written a little article on doing a "cross-install" on this motherboard. Another option would be getting a distribution such as the Gentoo Experimental series that comes with support for this controller.
