Smile screen resolution and wifi issues--demudi install on Dell Inspiron Laptop

I am basically a noob with some Linux experience, so here's what happened:

So the CD worked (finally) and installed Demudi 1.2.1 (with kernel 2.6. 12.3) on my Dell Inspiron 4000 Laptop-- woohoo.

It detected my wifi card (an Orinoco clone) when it did the first time during DHCP check, BUT didn't detect when it rebooted, pulled files from my CD, and unpacked everything. Thus, wifi card is dead in water. Any suggestions on how to get it going and what software to use for checking signals, etc?

Then the screen came up : big vibrating line down the middle of the screen! Looks like an X problem I figured. Screen resoultion was written as 1024 x 768 in the xorg.conf file (I know the 1024 is usually what my laptop is set-up as, not sure on the second number). Could this be a refresh issue? Gnome is the Desktop Manager for Demudi and when I tried to change the resoultion, it only listed 600x800. Ugh. Any suggestions on how to get this reconfigured...and I already tried:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
(trying to recall from memorgy exactly what I typed before) but it didn't work. I would rather do this fix from command line so I can learn. Also, am using Nano to edit files...

Any help appreciated!

1. Kernel used to install had oronoco stuff compiled in. Your os kernel probably doesent

reconfigure and recompile your kernel. If you dont know how better learn I peronally think every linux user needs to know how to do that. Plus it solves alot of issues with file systems / hardware

2. You probably gonna have to play with the stuff in xorg.conf

look for a section called screen

even better go into a consol su to root and type /usr/X11/xorgconfig

follow the prompts they are pretty self expalinitory.
