What happans when YOU type "X -configure" at the prompt, after seeing blank screen, X-server not correct driver. Are there alot of messages from the x-org server or is there an error message that says not "....." found. If there is a screen roll of many messages from x-org, try typing at the prompt "X -config /root/xorg.config.new". If there are VESA and Generic Drivers in YOUR Distro, the x-org server will try those and search for screens. [There is a space between the g and the /].

You should be able to install a driver from ATI (use google) providing the card is not too old. Everything works fine after that.
