Screen Corruptions, agggh!
 

hi all.

just wondering if anyone might know what this rubbish on my screen is.

i have been trying to tolerate it for a few month and now its taking its toll on me.
i'm not really sure what it is caused by but i can tell you that i have the following set up.

as you can see there are little red lines across the screen and when i move a window they seem to smudge distort all over the window they are a red on a white background and green on black. (OMG its annoying!)


i have tried so many things. i am relatively experienced with linux so typical things like recompiling the kernel and editing xorg-conf have been exhausted(of course any suggestions welcome).

i am yet to conclude whether this is a hardware issue or a software issue, i am getting corruptions at the boot up screen so i'm not entirely sure that it is isolated to the frame buffer driver(i have tried vesa, ati, uvesa). however, i do not seem to get this issue at the grub screen.

i am getting corruptions when using a live distro (puppy linux)and i have even taken out the HDD and it remains..

i have looked into flashing the bios but i have no idea how to do that on a Windoes-less system and i'm not even sure if it would help.

Best bet is that it is a hardware issue. I have seen bad VGA cables do similar things (especially long ones). You might also try reseating your video card. Heat issues can also do this, check video card for ack/dust.

my Asus v6800v is a laptop so it is not real easy to alter the gfx-card...or is it??! what can you suggest for a laptop.

the laptop does have a pretty annoying heat issue but there is not much i can do about that. its just a design fault.

I had similar issues with an Acer Extensa 4200. Also heat problems by design, I guess. However there was a command to put the grafics card in energy saving mode (command was included in the proprietary ati drivers). With energy preserving, the laptop was much cooler and the annoying grafic distorsions were gone.

Also this issue seems to be gone with the open source drivers as they did not use the 3D portion of the GPU at that time.

There is usually a flat cable that runs between the top and bottom of the case. Opening and closing the case MAY have caused separation of this cable.
