scanner not supported, is there a chance ?

Hi...
ive found out my flat bed scanner is not supported by linux.

but what exactly does that mean ?

is there a chance it will be supported in the next kernel (2.6)

or might i be able to find a specialised driver ?

or maybe wait for a new distro to support it ?

or does it mean it will never be supported, and i might aswell give up ?

The mane page for saned lists the "non-supported" scanners in a sort of order of precedence, plus there are a lot where the company that makes them just refuses to give out any specs... There's also hope that one of the CVS-only available "alpha" backends may work, what's the scanner model?

Cheers,

Mustek has recycled names here a lot and there's a big difference between these:

ScanExpress 1200 UB
Plus

ScanExpress 1200 USB
Plus

Or possibly a Bearpaw or a Paragon?

If its a ScanExpress 1200 UB Plus, there's an override option to get it to work. Edit the file:

/etc/sane.d/gt68xx.conf

And look for this bit at the top:

Code:
# gt68xx.conf: Configuration file for GT68XX based scanners
# Read man sane-gt68xx for documentation

##############################################################################
# Autodetect Mustek BearPaw 1200 CU, 2400 CU, Mustek ScanExpress 1200 UB Plus,
# Artec Ultima 2000, and several other GT-6801-based scanners
usb 0x05d8 0x4002

# Mustek BearPaw 1200 CU doesn't need any override

# Mustek ScanExpress 1200 UB Plus, Medion/Lifetec/Tevion LT 9452, Trust
# Compact Scan USB 19200 use that one:
#override "mustek-scanexpress-1200-ub-plus"
#vendor "Lifetec"
#model "LT 9452"
#vendor "Trust"
#model "Compact Scan USB 19200"

# Mustek ScanExpress 2400 USB
Uncomment the override line for the 1200, just take the # mark out of there, then save the file and try to start xsane.

Cheers,

You seem to have an old version of sane, the gt68xx looks to have been introduced in 1.0.9 or 1.0.10, (I haven't got it in 8 and I do in 10, so that's my guess). You might just want to upgrade sane from source.

Cheers,
