Angry Scanjet 4300c - Device Busy

Installed Mandrake 10 - all works except my scanner which is an HP Scanjet 4300c. The drake indicates its installed and working

When I try to use it I always get the message

'Failed to open device 'niash:libusb:001:003' Device busy

I'm new to Linux - any help would be much appreciated

Smile solution?

According to, your device is fully compatible with linux. I had the same message with an HP 3300 and I solved it. Probably it is the same thing. For me, the error message was misleading, as it was a permissions problem and it was solved by simply adding the user to the usb group and then re-logging. All the help you need can be found in the following document: /usr/share/doc/sane-backends-x.x.x/README.linux Also online at

Hope this helps. Greetings from Europe.
